Stevie Wonder in Tokyo

Stevie Wonder is playing his first gig in Tokyo and the place is absolutely packed to the rafters.

In a bid to break the ice with his new audience he asks if anyone would like him to play a request.

A little old Japanese man jumps out of his seat in the first row and shouts at the top of his voice "Play a Jazz chord ! Play a jazz chord!".

Amazed that this guy knows about the jazz influences in Stevie's varied career, the blind impresario starts to play an E minor scale and then goes into a difficult jazz melody for about 10 minutes.

When he finishes the whole place goes wild. The little old man jumps up again and shouts "No, no, play a Jazz chord, play a Jazz chord".

A bit pissed off by this, Stevie, being the professional that he is, dives straight into a jazz improvisation with his band around the B flat minor chord and really tears the place apart. The crowd goes wild with this impromptu show of his technical expertise.

The little old man jumps up again.

"No, no. Play a Jazz chord, play a jazz chord". Well and truly pissed off that this little guy doesn't seem to appreciate his playing ability Stevie says to him from the stage "OK smart ass. You get up here and do it!"

The little old man climbs up onto the stage, takes hold of the mike...
and starts to sing ....

" A jazz chord to say I ruv you..."

‘Pelindung’ operasi

Forceps left in woman's abdomen

JOHOR BARU: For more than one-and-a-half months, Kalaiyarasi Perumal endured a sharp pain in her lower abdomen.

She dismissed it as a possible side-effect from a hysterectomy she had in September.

It was only on Deepavali day, when the pain became unbearable and she vomited incessantly, that the assistant nurse suspected that something was wrong.

When she was rushed to the private hospital where she worked, doctors suspected food poisoning but an X-ray revealed a more shocking reason for her pain.

There was a foreign object in her abdomen.
Apparently, the object was accidentally left in her abdomen during her hysterectomy at a government hospital.

She had undergone the hysterectomy after she was diagnosed with a cyst in her womb.

Following the X-ray, her doctor referred her back to the hospital which had conducted the hysterectomy.

She underwent another three-hour surgery on Nov 11 and found out that the foreign object was a 20cm-long forceps.

The forceps had ruptured part of her intestines and doctors had to remove 5cm of the damaged intestine.

"It has been more than 10 days since I was warded. Now, I feel better and there is no more pain. But I am afraid that there may be problems in the future," said the single mother of one.

When asked if she was going to take legal action against the hospital, Kalaiyarasi, 44, said her focus now was to get well.

The hospital director could not be contacted.

Tidur boleh, seks jangan

KUALA LUMPUR: Lagak seperti perempuan jalang, namun mereka digelar ‘Minah ringan-ringan’ kerana hanya menawarkan perkhidmatan seperti menemani pelanggan bersuka ria dan menonton wayang.

Usaha mendekati Fara mulanya menghadapi kesukaran berikutan dia curiga bagaimana penulis memperoleh nombor telefon bimbitnya dan banyak bertanya berkaitan latar belakangnya.

Fara menetapkan perkhidmatannya RM100 selain memberi amaran jangan cuba-cuba melakukan hubungan seks kecuali adegan ringan-ringan.

“Saya tak mahu jadi perempuan simpanan...cukup keluar suka-suka. No commitment!

Ini terbukti apabila dia mendakwa amat meminati lakonan Jessica Biel dalam filem I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry yang dianggapnya mempunyai daya tarikan seksual kepada lelaki selain Simon Cowell juri American Idol’s.

‘Broom award’ draws criticism

KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Mentri Besar's awarding of brooms to under-performing local councils and state agencies to remind them to buck up has drawn flak from many quarters.

Many find his “broom bouquet” for poor performance in poor taste and crude.

The “broom award” was even brought up in Parliament on Tuesday.

The civil service umbrella union Cuepacs said it received calls from its members from other states complaining about the broom.

Cuepacs president Omar Osman said members asked if there was indeed no other way for Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo to express his dissatisfaction.

On Monday, at an excellence awards ceremony Dr Khir gave a broom each to the Hulu Selangor District Council and Hulu Selangor Land Office for failing to collect assessment for 2006 above the stipulated 50% mark.

Dr Khir also warned agencies that failed to hit the target for 2007 to expect the same “present”.

“We can understand the feelings of the civil servants attending the ceremony. The brooms were given openly, without even trying to disguise these by wrapping them,” said Omar on Tuesday.

“We cannot accept such an act. Although we support the Mentri Besar’s intention for all civil servants to improve their performance, there is a better way of doing it, such as giving the agencies a low star ranking or a reminder letter.”

As civil servants who form the backbone of the Selangor state government were loyal staff, they did not deserve such a treatment in public, Omar said.

Public Services director-general Tan Sri Ismail Adam declined to comment, except to say that “there are many ways of telling civil servants how to do their jobs.”

“You can tell them directly or issue them a directive. There are many ways to ‘skin a cat’ but you have to find one that is appropriate,” he said.

In Parliament, Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Haji Omar (BN-Larut) questioned whether presenting a broom, which is linked to bad luck, was appropriate as an award.

“There must be other ways to motivate the staff. Certainly not a broom,” said Raja Ahmad.

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun, in her reply, also said that she did not agree with giving out brooms.

“But I am sure the Selangor Mentri Besar, who is intelligent, would know its suitability,” said Azizah (BN-Beaufort).

In Penang, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad said that when a person had done something good, he should be praised in public but if he has failed to perform, then he should be rebuked in private.

FM: I think...what the Selangor Mentri Besar's "initiative" is a brilliant idea. I think public 'shaming' may be the best way to shake up the civil servants. There is no excuse for civil servants to show sub-standanrd work with the recent pay increase. I wish the rest of the State Governmnet in Malaysia follows the example of the Selangor Menteri Besar. Kudos...

Two state depts in Selangor get brooms for poor performance

SHAH ALAM: Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo yesterday told two state government departments to buck up or face the consequences.

Presenting them with a broom each for their poor performance at the Selangor Tax Collection Special Award 2006 function here, he said they did not meet the target of 90 per cent current year and 70 per cent arrears collection for 2006.

The brooms were given to the representatives of the two departments in conjunction with the Quality Month 2007 of the state government.

Last year, the Hulu Selangor district and land office managed to collect only 55 per cent of current taxes and 56 per cent of arrears while the Hulu Selangor District Council posted 66.9 per cent and 23.4 per cent, respectively.

However, their performance improved after an announcement was made that the award presentation would take place, Dr Khir said.
As of September, the former collected 85 per cent of current taxes and 76 per cent arrears while the latter achieved 69.2 per cent for current taxes and 26 per cent for arrears.

Dr Khir told reporters after the presentation ceremony that the brooms were meant as a symbol for the departments to "sweep out" their poor attitude towards work and take action against non-productive employees.

"They did not achieve the minimum collection targets and they also failed to take action against any officer, as if they tolerated the poor performance," he said, adding that the state government would act against them.

Departments which performed well were rewarded with trips overseas, as an incentive, Dr Khir said. -- Bernama

Parents cheated of RM3.5 million

KUALA LUMPUR: After paying a total of RM3.5mil to get places for their children in what they thought was Manipal University, one of the best medical universities in India, 52 parents are now in a quandary. They believe they have been conned.

In an added twist, one of the two agents and a Commissioner of Oaths, who collected the money from the parents, also turned up at a press conference organised by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong to protest their innocence.

Chong said both parties were the victims of a K. Jayabalan, a businessman, who claimed to have been the university's appointed agent. The Commissioner of Oaths, a friend of Jayabalan, helped him recruit students.

Chong said the parents, who read about the offer in local English and Tamil newspapers put in by the agents, were asked to bank in the tuition fees through the agents and the Commissioner of Oaths into a bank account registered under the Manipal Academy of Higher Education Medical Educational Advisory Consultants.

“Each one of them paid a fee ranging from RM50,000 to RM200,000 for a place at the university,'' he added.

It was only when one of the agents and the Commissioner of Oaths took 23 students, accompanied by some of the parents, to register at the university in September that they found out that it was all a scam.

“They found out that all the documents, including the admission letters, were forged, when they met the registrar of the university in India,” Chong said.

Thailand crowned world's transsexual beauty queen

FM: Only in Thailand....

Dressed in a flowing yellow gown with matching earrings, a demure Thai business student wept and embraced her rivals after being crowned the world’s most beautiful transsexual.

Tanyarat Jirapatpakon was today named Miss International Queen of 2007, besting 23 stunning transsexuals who had come to the Thai beach resort of Pattaya from as far as Germany and Puerto Rico for a shot at the diamond crown.

The Thai’s extravagant yet elegant costumes and dedication to environmental causes helped carry the day, taking her past runners-up Aleika Barros of Brazil and Chanel Madrigal of the Philippines.

“I feel excited and so happy. Everybody enjoyed the contest and I didn’t expect anything like this,” the 21-year-old said from atop her throne after winning 10,000 dollars and the title.

In a nation obsessed with beauty pageants and famous for its sexual tolerance, this elaborate contest is taken every bit as seriously as the more traditional competitions.
Contestants’ costumes can cost up to one million baht (33,000 dollars), and the audience was treated to all the glitz and glam of conventional beauty pageants, complete with swimsuit and evening-wear rounds.

“This is the night I have been preparing for my whole life,” gushed Colombia’s Melania Armenta, a 25-year-old model.

Festivities began on Saturday evening, with last year’s winner Erica Andrews performing “Mexican Aztec” — an upbeat, pulsating dance homage to her homeland complete with ancient pyramids, flashing native symbols and historic outfits.

In the costume round, Tanyarat had to compete against a butterfly, a swan and a Mercedes Benz, but the top prize in the category was given to Japan’s Beni Tsukishima for her authentic kabuki ensemble.

Tanyarat’s angelic white-beaded evening wear, fit for the grandest of galas, gave way to the more salacious floral pink bikini in the swimsuit competition, showing off her shapely legs and slim figure.

But she finally wooed the crowd with dedication to loftier issues.

“Global warming is one of the most serious problems the world faces today,” she said when asked how she helps educate people on environmental issues.

“I tell them to ’think about it’. It’s your world too,” she said.

The crowd, consisting of mostly Thais and the occasional bewildered tourist, cheered loudly for the homegrown favourite but were upstaged by feverish, flag-waving Filipinos who supported four of their compatriots.

Tiffany’s Show Pattaya, which runs the event and claims to be the world’s largest transsexual cabaret, said more than 25 million Thai television viewers had been expected to tune in.

Known in Thailand as “kathoey,” or the third gender, Thai transsexuals have slowly been leaving cabarets for mainstream success in music and other endeavours, helped in part by the popularity of beauty contests.

Participants praised Thailand for its progressive attitude towards sexuality.

“There is still a lot of discrimination against people like me in the Philippines,” said 24-year-old Rain Marie Madrigal, from Manila.

“Thailand is like a utopia for transgender people.” - AFP

Painful sucks

PETALING JAYA: What was supposed to be a nice traditional treatment ended up being a horrifying event for Liew Yooi Hean.

Instead of getting a soothing cupping therapy, the 28-year-old salesman ended up suffering from painful burns, which left marks all over his back.

Last Sunday, he went to a local massage parlour in Puchong here to get the treatment, but midway through the session he experienced an extreme burning sensation.

“For 20 minutes I was left alone in the therapy room with my back on extreme heat,” he said.

The therapy involved placing heated glass cups on the back. People believe that the treatment helps remove wind from the body.

“I noticed blisters all over my back and there was water and blood oozing out,” he added.

He only discovered some 28 suction marks on his back when he got home.

Liew paid RM90 for the therapy, which included foot reflexology.

“The blisters and marks were on my shoulders right down to my lower back,” he said, adding that he has lodged a police report and sought medical attention.

Liew has also sought the help of MCA public services and complaints department head Datuk Michael Chong.

Chong said the parlour owner has paid Liew RM500 in compensation.

“A Chinese physician told me the burning sensation and blisters only occurred if the body was too oily,” he said.

Liew said he was not informed of the “effects” of the therapy during the session.

Chong advised people to be more cautious before going for any kind of therapy.

Boy's fingertip down toilet flushed by hospital staff

SUNGAI PETANI: A woman carefully packed her son's severed fingertip in ice and rushed it to the hospital hoping that doctors would be able to re-attach it.

However, a hospital staff took one look at it and decided it could not be re-attached. He then flushed the digit down the toilet.

A flabbergasted Zuraiza Omar has lodged a police report on the incident and is claiming that Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital was negligent.

Zuraiza's son, Muhamad Shaeidil Amir, 11, was injured on Friday when he accidentally sliced off the tip of his left forefinger while cutting off the top of a coconut with a parang at his home in Kampung Batu Menunggul, Air Putih, Pendang.

"My son was referred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital at 11am, on Friday. I also took the fingertip, which I packed in ice," said the 35-year-old housewife.
She said her son was treated at the hospital's emergency department, and a staff there asked her for the finger tip.

"He looked at it and said it could not be re-attached. He went out of the room and returned a few minutes later.

"The other staff asked for the fingertip and the man nonchalantly replied that he had flushed it down the toilet. I could sense that his colleagues were shocked by their expression."

Zuraiza said the doctor was also taken aback when she informed him of what had happened.

She then lodged a report at the Alor Star police station.

State health director Dr Hasnah Ismail said the incident was being investigated.

Two old ladies smoking

Jane and Arlene are outside their nursing home, having a drink and a smoke, when it starts to rain.
Jane pulls out a condom, cuts off the end, puts it over her cigarette, and continues smoking.

Arlene: What in the hell is that?

Jane: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn't get wet.

Arlene: Where did you get it?

Jane: You can get them at any drugstore.

The next day, Arlene hobbles herself into the local drugstore and announces to the pharmacist that she
wants a box of condoms.

The pharmacist, obviously embarrassed, looks at her kind of strangely (she is after all, over 80 years
of age), but very delicately asks what brand of condom she prefers.

"Doesn't matter Sonny, as long as it fits on a Camel."

The pharmacist fainted

Nurin autopsy photo culprit arrested

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have identified the culprit who posted the autopsy photographs on the Internet of eight year-old rape and murder victim Nurin Jazlin Jazimin.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan, however, declined to say when or where the suspect was arrested. “You will know him when we bring him to court and charge him,” he told reporters at a Hari Raya event at the Police Training College last night.

Nurin Jazlin went missing on Aug 20 after going out to a night market alone near her home in Wangsa Maju here.

Her naked body was found stuffed in a sports bag near a shoplot in Petaling Utama on Sept 20. Several days later, the post mortem photographs that were allegedly snapped from classified documents were posted on the Internet through e-mails.

Regarding the killing of two police detectives in Sungai Buloh on Oct 25, Musa said: “Please don't ask me about this. We are still investigating.”

In the 7.30pm incident, lance corporals Jaya Balan Krishnan, 30, and Alagesan Malapan, 41, were shot dead in Taman Sri Suria, Kampung Desa Aman in what was believed to have been a drug bust gone wrong.

Datukship awarded to man convicted of Criminal Breach of Trust

MALACCA: A former state agency official who was awarded a datukship on Monday by Malacca was convicted of criminal breach of trust in 1995.

Former international manager of Malacca International Trade Centre, Hasnoor Sdg Husin, was found guilty and convicted of criminal breach of trust and was sentenced to nine months’ jail by a Sessions Court here on April 28, 1995, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said.

He appealed and the High Court in Malacca set aside the sentence and replaced it with one day's jail and a RM1,500 fine or six months' jail, Lim said during a press conference here yesterday.

Hasnoor did not appeal against the conviction and paid the fine.

When contacted, Hasnoor said he had nothing to comment except that the award was given by the state.

He received the Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka (DMSM) on Monday in conjunction with the 69th birthday celebrations of Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob.

Lim said he received many letters from the people who expressed unhappiness that a convicted person had been given the datukship.

Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam's officers, when contacted, said the DAP had similarly raised the issue when Hasnoor was appointed to a government post a few years ago.
