In MALACCA, a 56-year-old unemployed man committed suicide outside his home along a busy street in Banda Hilir here yesterday.
Teoh Cheng Liat, who was said to be a heavy drinker, told his wife at lunch that it would be his last meal.
He then hanged himself from a tree outside his house.
His wife, who did not want to be named, said he had threatened in the past to take his own life but had always backed down.
“He has done this many times before. This was his third time this year. He always ties the rope on the tree and then changes his mind,” she said.
She said her husband had told her to give the car keys to their children and wished his three pet dogs goodbye before going out of the house at about 3pm.
“I saw him tying the rope on the branch but because he'd done it so often in the past, I just let him be,” she said.
Teoh leaves behind three children.
