JOHOR BARU: Forced marriages and sexual harassment were among the horrific acts that women “enslaved” by a self-proclaimed spiritual healer were forced to endure in Ulu Tiram.
As for men, the 40-year-old known as “Nandu (crab) Bala” forced them to steal and intimidate those who threatened him.
Victims who escaped from his clutches told relatives of how he had brainwashed them under the pretext of spiritual healing.
Some have lodged reports and given statements to the police after the New Straits Times reported yesterday that the healer had been arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl last year.
The girl had apparently been staying in a commune belonging to the healer in Kampung Oren which also had a hostel and temple.
Housewife P. Amir Tham said her daughters, Bavani J. Naidu and Malarkodi J. Naidu, came under Nandu Bala’s spell in 2004 when he was invited for prayers at her house in Ulu Tiram.
The healer persuaded her to let him take Bavani, who was then 14, into his care as he claimed that the girl was under a spell.
“After several months, we went to Nandu Bala’s commune in Kampung Oren to claim my daughter, but he threatened to hurt us if we did not leave.” Malarkodi went to look for her sister but was entrapped by the healer.
Amir Tham’s son, Krishnan J. Naidu, 30, who was a henchman of the healer, escaped last year.
Another victim, J. Pancawanam, 24, managed to escape Nandu Bala’s clutches after serving him between 2001 and 2004.
“We were assaulted with a rubber hose, hoes and broom sticks.
We were told that our family members would be murdered if we did not marry his male followers,” Pancawanam claimed.
“Women given a bath by the medium would be molested during the ritual. New arrivals are not allowed to mix freely and kept in isolation.” Nandu Bala’s former henchmen Woo Kok Pau @ Bonji, 28, and Krishnan had in their five years of service seen about 20 girls falling into Nandu Bala’s clutches.
“I heard that he had started out selling crabs by the roadside at various locations in Johor. That is how he earned his nickname,” said Woo.
“Among other things, we were forced to intimidate and beat up people besides stealing.” Woo claimed that some of them were even forced to take housing loans, getting relatives to stand as guarantors.
V. Murali has written numerous letters to the MIC and non-governmental organisations to seek their help in rescuing his wife N.
Parameswati, 30, from the healer.
“I lost my wife to that man when she went to the commune in 2004,” he said.
“She was supposed to have had an evil spirit cast out. She came home a few months later but returned to him. I have not seen her since.” Murali had also compiled a list of six women and six men held captive by Nandu Bala and had submitted copies to the MIC, state government, federal police contingent and state police in September last year.
