GEORGE TOWN: A 72-year-old shipping company employee slipped and fell into the sea while answering nature’s call on board a tugboat yesterday.
Bashah Hassan of Sungai Pinang was with his colleague, Mazuki Abu Bakar, 58, when the incident happened shortly after midnight.
Bashah struggled and shouted frantically for help after falling into the sea but Mazuki could do nothing to save him due to the choppy waves and strong currents.
Relating the incident, Mazuki said Bashah had told him earlier that he wanted to ease himself.
"Shortly, I heard Bashah’s loud screams for help. I had a shock when I saw him struggling to keep himself afloat in the rough seas."
Mazuki threw a rope for Bashah but the victim failed to grab it.
A search-and-rescue mission was jointly conducted by the Marine Police, Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Department.
Bashah’s body has yet to be recovered.
