KUALA LUMPUR: He ended up RM1.7 million poorer in order to claim RM100,000 purportedly won in a lucky draw.
But when it dawned on him that he had been conned, it was already too late.
Relating his experience to the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department yesterday, Chung said it started in April when his wife received a phone call informing her she had won RM100,000 in a lucky draw.
"My wife dismissed it as a prank but the caller was persistent and I happened to answer the call one day. I was told the money was in a Hong Kong bank account and when I called to check, it was confirmed by the bank manager."
Chung said after paying US$7,000 (RM24,560) as instructed, he was told that he had won RM2.4 million.
In the process of claiming his prize, he travelled twice to Hong Kong where he was met by two men, including the bank manager.
"They drove expensive cars and treated me to dinners at posh hotels and restaurants, which convinced me the lucky draw was genuine."
Chung said upon returning home, he was told to pay 10 per cent of the RM2.4 million as insurance, which he did.
He made 86 deposits amounting to RM1.7 million, of which RM700,000 was from his savings and the remainder which he borrowed.
